The 15 inch wheels and the attractive alloys enhance the road presence of this “World First, India First” car. Knowing that Indians love chrome (just remember the chrome accessories list for the Fortuner), the Etios has a bold chrome strip on the boot lid like in the Maruti Swift Dzire. The tail lamp design looks like a squashed Mahindra Logan tail lamp and doesn’t exactly go with the elegant front face of the car.
The interior of the Etios VX variant has two tone seats (red and black) with no adjustable head rests. The instrument panel is in the centre just like in the Chevrolet Spark, Tata Nano and Indica Vista. Toyota offers an optional audio system with steering mounted controls. The steering wheel has a flat base which should help large-sized individuals slip into the car easily.
The test car that Overdrive looked at had a few quality issues, which may be sorted out in production cars. The feel of the plastics isn’t upmarket. The rear seat is exceptionally deep and can easily seat three abreast. Legroom is also seems adequate for tall people.
Under the hood is the 1.5 litre petrol engine producing 90 PS of maximum power and 140 Nm of peak torque. The 930 kg kerb weight of the Etios makes it one of the lightest sedans to be made in India. The boot space is enormous as well.
There are four variants of the Etios expected at prices between Rs. 5.5 lakh to Rs. 7 lakh, making it very competitive. The diesel variant of the Etios edan is expected next year, and the hatchback may be rolled out in March 2011.
