Google Driving Billions of Hits to Facebook, Other Social Networks

One of the primary purposes of Google's Chrome browser is to push what Google does best: search. The address bar has been integrated with the search box--all queries, suggestions, and misspelled URLs go through Google first.

But Chrome is only the latest service to use Google as a middleman. The company has become so synonymous with web browsing that most users see its search box as a replacement for the address bar. Topping the charts for the most searched terms of 2010, according to a new report from Experian Hitwise, are searches that could have been found simply by adding ".com."

YouTube, Craigslist, and MySpace are some of the top ten most searched items; in the top 50 are Netflix, ESPN, and Hulu. Instead of heading directly to YouTube.com or Netflix.com, millions of users every month prefer to search for the sites on Google and click the top result, rather than typing a measly four extra characters.

Nothing demonstrates this (laziness? addiction?) more than searches for Facebook. The term "Facebook" was the top-searched term for 2010 (not to mention 2009), and accounted for 2.11% of all US searches. What's more, four variations on the term "Facebook" were among the top 10 searches--including "Facebook.com" and "www.Facebook.com".

Together the Facebook queries make up nearly 3.5% of overall Google searches, a 207% increase since last year. A recent report pegged monthly Google search queries at 10.6 billion, meaning Facebook-related searches--those users specifically looking to go to Facebook.com--make up around 370 million monthly searches in the US, and close to 4.5 billion searches annually.

For a company trying to make headway into social networking, Google drives a significant amount of traffic to other social networks. A whopping 4.18% of all Google searches are social network-related terms--billions of hits that, we can safely assume, are not heading to Google Buzz. And it's not likely the search giant is earning revenue from this traffic either; Google charges for advertising, not actual results. They are, however, paying for the servers that crunch these searches.

This represent a huge chunk of traffic that could easily disappear when more people figure out how to use their browser's address bar--or start using the increasingly popular mobile apps that take them directly to a site or service.

Downloading using Torrents

Using Torrents is an easy way for downloading movies, games, softwares etc. This post will teach you how to use and download a torrent file. Although, you have to be careful because many torrents are illegal and violate copyright laws.

1. Download a torrent client(The most commonly used are uTorrent, bitTorrent etc).
2. Open a torrent site (or torrent search engine-www.torrentz.com).
3. Search the file you want.
4. Download the torrent for your file.
5. Open the torrent in your client software.
6. Download will start automatically.
7. The file will be downloaded to the selected location.

Things to remember when downloading and using torrents

1. While downloading a torrent look for the seeders leachers count. The seeder count should be more also it should be greater than the leachers count.

2. A practical tip is to stick with downloading torrents that have a large user base. This means download only those torrents that many people have downloaded and uploaded, or that have been active for a long time. The logic here is that nobody will seed a torrent that has a virus in it and therefore the torrent won't be very popular and won't be seeded. Be wary of the week old torrent with one or two people seeding it.

3. Seeders (Seeds) [Upload]: Are people who have a complete copy of the torrent's files and are only uploading (sending) data to the people who are downloading (receiving).

4. Leechers (Peers) [Download]: Are people who are currently downloading the file. Leechers can become seeders after downloading the full file.

5. Browsing internet along with downloading torrents may slowdown both operation. Better use one at a time. Or you can use the 'pause' button to pause the download while browsing internet.

6. Downloading torrents can slow your computer down depending on how well your computer performs. Recommended specs for each client vary, but on average you should have at least 512 MB of RAM and a 1 GHz CPU. You will also need space for the files you want to save.

7. Keep your virus protection up to date.

8. Do not download any copyrighted files.

Happy Downloading  :)

Facebook Overthrows Yahoo To Become The World’s Third Largest Website

We’ve seen this one coming all year. Facebook is now the third largest website in the world, taking the No. 3 spot from Yahoo, according to comScore. Facebook drew an estimated 648 million unique visitors from across the globe in November, 2010, compared to 630 million for Yahoo. In October the two sites were dead even with 633 million worldwide unique visitors each (actually Facebook had already passed Yahoo by a smidgeon in October with about half a million more visitors). The only two Web properties left which are bigger than Facebook are Microsoft (869 million worldwide visitors) and Google (970 million) when you look at all of their sites collectively.

The evidence leading up to this overthrow has been building up for a long time. Facebook became the fourth largest Website in the world nearly 18 months ago, and quickly passed Yahoo in pageviews. Today, Facebook accounts for nearly a quarter of all display ads in the U.S., which is more than twice as much as Yahoo.

Facebook also recently passed Yahoo to become the second largest video site in the U.S., and is also the ssecond largest source of traffic (after Google) to other video sites on the Web. No wonder Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz sees Facebook as her biggest competitor, not Google.

In the U.S., however, Facebook is still No. 4 in terms of total monthly visitors (with 152 million), and Yahoo is No. 1 (with 181 million). So not all is lost. Note also that these comScore visitor estimates are different than Facebook’s official user numbers which are somewhere north of 500 million worldwide, but they are better for making apples-to-apples comparisons between sites.

C 3 - Dedicated for social networking

Nokia C3 is young and social, simple and reliable. Messaging and social networking are the very heart of this handset.A QWERTY messenger focused on the basics, the Nokia C3 is an excellent upgrade option for the budget-minded. And social networking isn’t just a thing for marketing to work with. The full QWERTY keyboard, dedicated Messaging and Contacts keys, along with Wi-Fi connectivity round off a solid package that will give the right user all the performance they need.

Key features

QWERTY messenger bar
Quad-band GSM/EDGE
802.11b/g Wi-Fi support
Solid SNS integration on the homescreen and with dedicated buttons
2.4" 256K-color QVGA display with excellent sunlight legibility
2 megapixel fixed-focus camera
QVGA video recording at 15fps
Series 40 UI, 6th edition
Stereo FM radio with RDS, Visual radio
Bluetooth (with A2DP)
Standard microUSB port
microSD card slot (8GB supported, 2GB included)
3.5mm audio jack
Great audio quality
Reasonable price

Main disadvantages

Not symbian but looks similar to symbian
No 3G
Low-grade camera, no autofocus, no flash
Poor video recording
S40 is outdated, never mind the visual updates
No multi-tasking
Doesn't charge off the microUSB port
No USB cable in the retail box
No office document viewer
No smart dialing
No multitasking facility

S40 user interface is looking fancy

The C3 runs Nokia’s Series 40 user interface but it’s been styled to look a lot like Symbian S60 3rd. The dedicated Contacts and Messages buttons nod to the Eseries. Overall, the Nokia C3 UI tries to look above its pay grade.

Not that much has changed – at its core it’s still the limited S40 software so don’t expect any surprising novelties in the UI section.

The S40 strengths are still valid – simple and easy when it comes to the essential functions, no hanging, no bugs. Simple is not always bad.

Camera Not up to the mark

The Nokia C3 packs a 2MP fixed focus-camera, which snaps photos at 1600x1200 pixels and quite expectedly, results aren’t particularly impressive.

Typical Series 40, the camera settings are rather limited but reasonable given the phone’s price range. The available settings include white balance, resolution, various effects and a self timer.

Image quality is quite poor even by 2MP camera standards. Photos are often very noisy, the noise reduction algorithm can smear away whole areas and the color balance often misses the mark. Overall, we wouldn’t recommend using the C3 camera for much more than contact photos

The Nokia C3 is rather unimpressive in video capture too – it manages QVGA@20fps, which isn’t any good by anyone’s standards. We guess that sort of video is only good for an occasional MMS.

The major drawback of Series 40 is the lack of multitasking – and we’ll never see it implemented. But a lot of the features help work around this problem – like the new Communities app, which pulls updates in the background and Ovi Chat, which is a native app now and loads much faster than J2ME alternatives.

Both apps let you stay online and receive updates even when the app is not active which, as far as messaging is concerned, sorts out the lack of multitasking. And it’s not like there are a lot of third-party apps you’d install on an S40 phone.

The upshot of this is that the battery lasts longer and there are no unexpected hang-ups when background-running apps start acting up.

How criminals use Facebook to commit crime

  • London, Dec 20 (ANI): Think giving out basic personal information on Facebook is harmless? You might need to rethink, as a reformed burglar has given details on how a criminal can use your user account as a tool for committing a crime.
"The information people give out on Facebook, when linked up with other information freely available on the internet, is an absolute -goldmine for criminals," the Daily Mail quoted Michael Fraser, a reformed burglar who presents the BBC's 'Beat The Burglar' programme, as saying.
"One year, you might have a party and give out your address. A while later, you might tell everyone that it is your 30th birthday.

"So, if you've accepted me as a friend of a friend, I know your name, your address and your birth date.
"From that, I can go to 192.com and on there I can find out what you do for a living, how much your home is worth - and whether you're likely to be worth burgling.
"I might have already made up my mind because you've posted party -pictures on Facebook and I can see what kind of valuables you have in the house - and which rooms they're in. Then you go and tell your Facebook friends how much you're looking forward to going on holiday next Tuesday.
"I can go on to Google Street View and see actual photographs of your home. I can see if you have a burglar alarm, or whether there are any bushes in the garden to hide in. And I can see all the alleyways I can escape down. And, of course, I know you won't be at home.
"Burglars only burgle homes if they think they can get away with it. All of this information is likely to leave them feeling much more confident that they can," added Fraser.
Co-operative Insurance company revealed that 36 per cent of users regularly make use of them to broadcast their whereabouts when they are away from home.
"Once you accept a stranger into your Facebook account, they can begin what we call social -engineering - -delicately asking questions to build up information about you,' said Jason Hart, -senior vice -president of -CRYPTOCard Network Security.
"And that can cause havoc. Let's say they got your email address, then they could go to your email account pretending to be you and saying you have -forgotten your password.
"The account will then ask a security question - something like your favourite food or your first pet. Over the following weeks and months, it isn't hard for them to work -conversations round to subjects like that on Facebook.
"Once they have that secret -information, the email account will let them in. And once they are in there, they can find lots of sensitive information, such as your Amazon and eBay account history.
"They can then go to those sites pretending to be you and saying you have lost your passwords, and guess what happens then?
"Those sites send the passwords to your email account - the one that they have already conned their way into.
"Crooks who do this usually use the credit card details you have stored there to buy online gift vouchers that can be traded on the internet. It is a form of instant -currency.
"Even worse, if you have a PayPal account and have credit in it, your so-called friend could clean it out.
"Effectively, they have become an electronic version of you, they can change all your passwords and begin stealing from you.
"The message is simple: you wouldn't invite a perfect stranger into your house simply because they knocked on your door and said they wanted a look around. So why do it on Facebook?," Hart added.

Mozilla Firefox 4: New Betas For Desktop PC and Android Mobiles

Mozilla Firefox 4.0 is now in beta 8 stage for PC operating systems, and beta 3 stage for the Android mobile OS. While it already has considerable momentum on the PC (desktops/laptops), we are particularly waiting to see the impact it makes on the mobile platform. As a freeware app, and being one that is already well-recognized, Firefox has the potential of taking a majority market-share as a web browser, on an OS that is fast growing in user numbers.

Availability of Firefox on mobile is pretty much restricted only to Nokia's Maemo (N900) and Google's Android OS (2.0 and above). Both are Linux operating systems in essence, running on non-x86 processors. Firefox browser for the PC on the other hand, is available to many x86-based operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and FreeBSD.

The desktop version of the browser, Firefox 4.0 beta 8, brings new features - some of the top ones are listed below:
- Visual overview of all open tabs, for sorting/grouping.
- Improved Firefox Sync, meant for desktop and mobile devices.
- HTML5 support, including WebM video format.
- Hardware acceleration (via GPU) for some rendering operations.
- JägerMonkey, a new, faster JavaScript engine.
This is scheduled to be the last beta, before the final/stable version releases in early 2011.

Firefox 4.0 beta 3 for mobile (formerly codenamed Fennec) brings these features among others:
- Firefox Sync feature built-in.
- Add-ons (somewhat like extensions).
- Option to "Save as PDF".
- Password Manager.
- Support for Android-style menus and keyboards.
- Support for uploading files.
- Supports playing video in Full-screen.
- The "Awesome Bar" and "Awesome Screen".
You can download Firefox Beta for mobile, either through scanning QR code or install by browsing to the mobile site directly using Android's default mobile browser.

How to view malayalam fonts in web pages

Some of my friends asked me how to view Malayalam fonts in websites, they see only some boxes instead of the actual font. You might have also noticed this, not only Malayalam but also with other foreign languages. So my first post is about viewing malayalam fonts(or any other languages) in websites. This is not a new thing, but as there are newbies around the net every time, I decided to write a post about it.
The web browsers like Mozilla and internet explorer have a greater support to many fonts, but some other browsers including chrome have less support for fonts. In that case we need to manually add the fonts used by the websites in our computer. The commonly used fonts have an extension .TTF or .FON. first we need to download this font file from the internet and add to the fonts library.

The steps and screen shots are shown below

1.Download the font
some commonly used malayalam fonts are

Malayala Manorama
DOWNLOAD Manorama.ttf

Deshabhimani
DOWNLOAD MLW-TTREVATHI.TTF

Deepika
DOWNLOAD mlkr0ntt_TTF.ttf

Other commonly used fonts
DOWNLOAD jacobs mal medium.TTF
DOWNLOAD AnjaliOldLipi.ttf

2.Right click and copy the file

3.Open Control Panel
   Start>Control Panel

4.Open Fonts folder
 Start>Control Panel>Fonts

5.Paste the fonts
Edit>paste

6.Now close and reopen your browser.
Now you can read the fonts...Enjoy.
   Thanks for reading.
